Chapter Two
`Simon, please.’ I tried to keep my voice even but I was having trouble getting the words out at all. `You’re my boyfriend.’
Simon took one last drag, dropped the cigarette butt and ground it into the pavement with a brown leather shoe I didn’t recognize. Looking up at the sky, he blew out his breath loudly.
`You’re not the one.’
I folded my arms tightly, pressing my fingernails into my bare arms.
`I’m sorry, Rachel,’ he said, looking quickly back down at the street. Anywhere but at me. ‘I’m wasiting your time. You’re not the one.’
`I’m not …’ I cleared my throat and started again. `I’m not the one?’
`No,’ Simon replied.

Lindsey Kelk’s The Single Girl’s To-Do List was a hilarious read into today’s world of Twitter and Facebook break-ups. I’ve been reading too many novels set in the early 18-19th century so what a delightful change to be brought back to the modern time with references to the 21st century’s realities. I found myself nodding at some of the scenes and thought “yeah - that is so FACEBOOK!”
Rachel Summers made me laugh and cringe when she sought out to change her world in the face of her 5 year relationship break up. Her reality is left to pieces with the revelation that she is “not the one” by her boyfriend Simon. We root for her List and smile at the assortment of things she must accomplish to rid herself of her old life. She clings to a non productive dreamer status and we want to slap her to “get on with it” when she pines for the spineless Simon. How can someone who is so intelligent be so blind to the potential in front of her? We want to protect her and be her friend so as to rally her on to a newer life- one without Simon.
I was surprised by how much I liked Kelk’s The Single Girl’s To-Do List. It was a light fun read that made my summer better for the chuckles it bought. A chick -lit that got it right and had me laughing with its references to Rachel’s discovery of Simon’s FB’s relationship status to “Single”. Priceless-but oh so true in today’s world where FB is the ultimate social network to divulge the latest on the lives of friends, families and strangers we’d love to meet. Isn’t it amazing how a simple click on FB can rattle a world.
Get this book before the end of summer hits and enjoy the laugh it brings. Be forewarned you might want to start your list To Do List with the number 1 item being “Buy Lindsey Kelk’s latest The Single Girl’s To Do- Do List since I need a good smile.”
